This week saw Tiger Woods pick up his 75th PGA Tour victory. I wasn’t convinced that he would do it in his first event of the year, but Torrey Pines is one of his stomping grounds. There is no arguing with Woods’ record round this course and that reflected in his low price. If you were a believer and backed him well done, if you followed any of my tips this is how we got on.
Nick Watney 25/1 1pt e/w (Win) +7.25: Watney had a good enough week to grab himself a tie for 3rd place, but it promised a lot more. At one stage Watney had got himself to -12 and with Woods eventually dropping back to -14 you wonder what could of been had Watney really pushed, a great front 9 in the final round and a terrible back 9 meant that in the end he fell flat. A nice e/w result however and one that I definitely expected.
Rickie Fowler 28/1 1pt e/w (Loser) -2pts: After a first round of +5 77 it looked as if Fowler had played himself out of the tournament and was in a tie for last place. His second round of -7 proved that there was a reason why he deserved to be backed. He has the ability to go to the extremes either way but I didn’t envision him playing so poorly on the first day. He was always looking to bounce back and didn’t let that horror day get the better of him, as he went on to finish -8 in a tie for 6th which in the end was a fantastic result for him personally. Although this goes down as a loss this week it shows great signs going forward for the young star and someone who you need to keep a keen eye on.
John Rollins 50/1 1pt e/w (Loser) -2pts: Rollins never got going this week and finished T44 finishing on -1. After making the cut at -3 he needed a big push to get himself in contention and unfortunately this never came. For a player who has had some great finishes here and now needs to get himself familiar with the top of the leader board again, this week won’t have helped boost his confidence. He never looked like mounting a challenge and making the cut was a bonus for him.
Stewart Cink 100/1 1pt e/w (Loser) -2pts: Cink was the only player out of the four to miss the cut and has shown that there is a still a long way to go on his path back to the top of his game. A player who has suffered massively from his Major win hangover looked to of put some of the worst behind him having an impressive finish at the Humana Challenge, this week proved that may not be the case. Facing a tougher course Cink really had to be in control of his game and in the end just wasn’t, a disappointing +2 finish will not help his cause and certainly didn’t do any punters any favours.
A brief mention for the tips for the Qatar Masters, both Castano and Olesen failed to make a place and although Victor Dubuisson managed to finish T9 he shared that postion with 5 others limiting the profit to just +.03 so in the -4 points in Europe. Disappointing as all three players played well for 3/4 of the tournament and just couldn’t get it done, so we will move swiftly on to the upcoming week.
Profit/Loss for 2013: -15.4
My tips for this week will follow imminently so I hope you will take a look and I also hope some of you were of on e/w with Watney.
As always @TomJacobs8 for any questions or feedback.
