Firstly I will start by saying hello and welcome to my first of many golf betting posts on the site. In the past @Golf_Guru_ has been doing betting tips and write ups for both the European Tour and the PGA Tour. This season The Guru will continue his tips for both tournaments but I will be doing the posts for the PGA Tour whilst he concentrates on the European Tour. This way we can both give detailed information behind each tips and hopefully this will benefit you all in the long run.
Anyway on to the golf. This week we are in Hawaii where 30 players are still playing the Hyundai Tournament of Champions due to multiple weather delays which has led to 36 holes being played Monday and 18 today. The Sony Open will be the first chance for many of the players on the PGA tour and each player will be looking for a quick start to the year. The market leader for the tournament this week is Dustin Johnson at 10/1 (General) who is currently (at time of posting) in pole position to win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Bearing in mind his short price and the fact that he will still be playing late Tuesday I will avoid him this week.
The course is the Waialae Country Club which is a 7,044 yard, par 70 course. The holes that are highlighted at this course are No.8 which features are sharp sloping green and No 13 which features a deep gully. Other than that it has been considered a reasonably flat course which should encourage some good play.
Charles Howell III 28/1 (Stan James & Bet Victor) 25/1 (General) 1pt e/w
Carl Pettersson 22/1 (BetVictor) 20/1 (General) 1pt e/w
Jonas Blixt 40/1 (SkyBet & StanJames) 33/1 (General) 1pt e/w
Keegan Bradley 18/1 (Bet365 & PaddyPower) 1pt win
So my top pick Charles Howell III is my top pick for one main reason, consistency. Howell has had three top 5 finishes in the last 4 years at this tournament. 2011 was the only time between 2009-2012 where he did not make the top 5 and he still made the cut that year. Last year he finished T2 with Carl Pettersson, Sean O’Hair and Harrison Frazar, finishing two behind the winner Johnson Wagner. He looks like a solid e/w hope and this is why I look to him this week at what I consider a good price considering his form at this course.
Carl Pettersson: A man who had a good season is 2012, picking up a win at the RBC Heritage and 5 top 10’s including 2nd the week before his win and T3 at the PGA Championship, his best performance in a major. So with all this mind why did I pick him for this week. I’ve picked him this week because as previously mentioned he finished T2 in 2012 and has also finished T5 in 2010 4 behind the winner. He will look to thrive against the challenge of players such as Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and Keegan Bradley and will look to a course where he has had relative success as a kick start to his season in 2013.
Jonas Blixt: My outside pick, picked mainly because of his attractive top price of 40/1. A player who like his fellow compatriot Pettersson enjoyed a great season in 2012, the difference being 2012 was his rookie year and he showed great confidence and ability throughout the year. Although he finished a lowly 54th at this tournament last year it was his very first PGA event and he still managed to go round under par at -1. He went on to finish 3rd at the HP Byron Nelson and the JT Shriners. Capped off with his 1st career win at the frys.com open. He finished the 2012 season 1st in Sand Saves, 1st in putting within 5-10′, 2nd in strokes gained-putting and 4th in total putting, unbelievable stats for a player in his rookie season!
Keegan Bradley: Not much needs to be said about this pick if you follow the PGA Tour. Consistently looks a threat and at time of posting was having a great final round at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Bradley is brimming with confidence, he has won a major, played in a Ryder Cup and won a WGC Championship all of this and he is only his 3rd season on tour. I like to have him involved in most tournaments and this one especially as it is a field missing many of the big stars.
